Подозрительно упала ФПС glxgears:
$ glxgears

Раньше было раз в 10 побольше.

так, пересобрал дрова, проблема так и осталась....

и посмотри куда идут симлинки, и какая версия у тебя дроф ?

я все парю 8.443.1-r1 дрова, пробовал 8.40.4, все без изменения.
Может я в корне все не так делаю:
когда пробую просто emerge ati-drivers, он не компилится, а выдает, что fgl_fglxgears не может быть собран.
Я ставлю руками бинарник с атишного сайта (ati-driver-installer-8.443.1-x86.x86_64.run), но после его установки
eselect opengl list
дает только одну опцию xorg-x11.......
Далее, перехожу на runlevel 1 - telinit 1, подрубаю сеть
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
и пробую
emerge ati-drivers и ..... компилится без проблем...
делаю
eselect opengl set ati
переходит...но толку от этого нет.
Вывод: руки мои кривы:) 3 ночи сижу в нете, все без результатно...

как всё запущено ;)
я сижу на x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.443.1-r1
они мне тоже сначала парили мозг, иксы валились. щас вроде нормально, они что то там пофиксили в ебилде.
думаю нужно попробовать поставить из портов, а бинарник не нужно ставить вовсе, и попытаться удалить все что он поставил.
Также запости ошибку при сборке.

Вот, что меня беспокоит:

opengl-update было до eselect, т.е. по сути я это и делал...
Удалось скомпилить только после правки ебилда-закомментил строки аборта при сборки fgl_glxgears, потом
ebuild /usr/portage/x11-drivers/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-8.443.1-r1 digest
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~adm64" emerge=ati-drivers-8.443.1-r1

конечно обработать напильником это хорошо,
но мой совет запостить инфу тебе на http://bugs.gentoo.org

оттуда понял, что не включена поддержка opengl!!!!
Пересобрал с юс-флагом opengl и все пошло!!!

Когда устанавливаю программу всегда использую флаги -fv или -fp потом выясняю что значат все флаги если я этого еще не знаю :)

вот ещё командочка с помощью которой я смотрю что нового в системе
emerge -NDuptv world
думаю ключи все по ману посмотреть мона )
также можешь посмотреть на equery
например команда
equery b equery
найдёт к какому пакету относиться equery
equery f gentoolkit
покажет все файлы из пакета
а команда
revdep-rebuild -- -pv
покажет те пакеты, которые не удовлетворяют зависимостям библиотек, например сменился API

вот с этими командами я сталкиваюсь каждый день
